ASAS DC Helps Eighth Graders with High School Lottery

April 11, 2016

Last Thursday over 60 parents, students, and volunteer mentors gathered at Stuart Hobson Middle School for the annual ASAS High School Application Workshop. From 6-8 pm, eighth graders applying to a variety of competitive high schools across DC received help and advice from young professionals on how to navigate the My School DC lottery application.

Throughout the evening students rotated through classrooms and received advice on every aspect of the application process. This workshop is just another example of how our We Are Ready (W.A.R) program helps students, especially eighth graders, get ready to succeed in high school.

While some students learned the importance of a firm handshake and a smile when interviewing with their prospective high school panels, others who have limited access to computers were able to begin their online application with the help of Ms. Williams, Stuart Hobson’s guidance counselor.

Students also learned about how the skills they have acquired both in school and ASAS could be translated into an impressive resume. One student, who was hesitant to mention her volunteer position of hosting tours for new students, was surprised when her mentor, who works for the White House, informed her that prospective high schools were interested in such activities. “I learned that by showing new students around on their first days I was acting like a leader”.

We wish our eighth graders good luck and look forward to keeping you all posted on the results of their hard work.
